What is a smudging ritual? Why would I need to preform such a ritual?
A Smudging ritual is the process of Clearing the air. In addition to bacteria, smudging can help clear the air of pollen, pet dander, dust, mold spores and other potential allergens to improve allergy symptoms. It also a powerful tool to remove negative energies and evil spirits its known for its protection. Not only can smudging cleanse any room, but it can cleanse objects.
You can use smudging Technics when you are feeling down and unsatisfied with life's abundance. I usually preform this ritual at least once a week to ensure that any energy picked up by visitors if negative can be cleared. I also always smudge during all my tarot card readings, I use smudging to consecrate my crystals and sometimes just to make the house smell amazing and zen.
So you ask how do I preform this ritual? there are a many ways as mentioned so lets concentrate on 3 ways.
Smudging House; The first Technics I use on a weekly basis its quite simple. first you will pick out your herb. Find a shell of some sort but not metal so that you may place your burning herbs as you walk around your house. It's very important to set your intention ei:" Dear Spirit i would like to ask for your assistance in clearing all the negative energy and evil spirits that are not invited into my home to have them leave please". The next step many people do differently but i like to walk from the back of the house from the furthest corner of the room and work my way towards the door of the room, if there are any windows make sure to go around the window to close any portals. then move on the next room going around the door ways to close any portals. Walk around each room expelling the evil energies out each door way towards my front door. Once arrive at the front door I open the door and push the smoke out. Close your door and take a minute to thank the spirit guides.
Smudging Objects; The Second Technic is cleansing objects, crystal's or yourself. start by picking your herb and burning until its smoking. Place the object above the smoke and again have the intention ei; " Dear Spirit please assist me in cleansing this crystal and Tarot cards from all previous energies so that they may only carry my energy''. You can preform this ritual on object that you have found or have bought from a store. Preform this on yourself also by simply taking the smoke and making waving motion over your body spread the smoke over your head to your toes.
Smudging for Rituals; This third Technic will only be used by very few that preform spiritual rituals. This can be used while you are in a witches circle to promote the protection of the spells, as you would in all other steps you will pick your herb and burn it but this time a lot until there is much smoke this will assist you in reading crystal balls and ensure protection.

All of these woods can be used for smudging your home and each hold a special meaning; Cinnamon is a grounding herb and its great for clearing out negative energy and replacing it with a clam grounding energy.
Spruce can be used to help develop intuition, as well as the ability to discern when to act on it. It will also aid in deepening spirituality or strengthening trust.
Birch is good for new beginning and rebirth also for purification and regrowth.
Ash can be used for magical ritual to bring interconnection and connections.
Maple will assist in bringing your desires of passion, strength, success, joy, sun, happiness, luck, money, healing, house blessing, as we think of the colors of the leafs red, orange yellow green brown.
Palo Santo when used for smudging inspires creativity, evoking protection, infusing blessings and bringing both love and good fortune.
Patchouli Root is a powerful addition to your rituals of magic helping you find personal growth also a powerful aid in spells of money drawing and fertility.
Yerba Santa is a holy herb used for protection and setting boundaries. The herb can also be used for Love, purification, growth, empowerment and beauty, the release of emotional pain stored in the hearth chakra.
Sweet Grass is used for healing , its a feminine energy it brings peace and spirituality. this medicine is used as a purifying herb.
White Sage
White sage when used will to clear out spiritual impurities, pathogens, and even insects its associated with purity and can be used to cleanse your home.
